DONCASTER ST LEGER 1801

The 26th winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 22nd September 1801 over the 2 miles of Town Moor, was Quiz, a chestnut colt by Buzzard out of Miss West, owned by Gilbert Crompton on behalf of Mr Goodricke. A field of 8 runners contested the race, although there were 11 subscriptions of 25 guineas each, which was worth 275 Guineas. (Equivalent to £21,200 in 2017)

The winner went into the St Leger as a maiden but came out of it victorious. It raced in the name of Gilbert Crompton but was actually owned by Mr Henry Goodricke. He had a successful career contesting 36 races and winning 21 including the Jockey Club Plate and a King's Plate at York. Over Round 128%
